A non-profit watchdog group has filed a complaint alleging that Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie brand engages in deceptive advertising.
CNBC reports that Truth in Advertising submitted the results of their investigation to the Federal Trade Commission and the Santa Cruz, California district attorney’s office yesterday, in which they accused the company of “deceptively [promoting] discounts and product prices.”
According to the organization, Savage x Fenty’s website displays prices only available to those who are a part of their membership program.
The complaint also portends that the company automatically adds the $49.95/month membership fee to customer shopping carts and only informs shoppers of this via the fine print at checkout — something that means customers must know to remove the membership from their cart before payment in order to avoid being charged.
“By default, the company enrolls consumers into a negative option offer known as the Xtra VIP Membership without clearly and conspicuously disclosing all the material terms and conditions, such as needing to take affirmative action every month to avoid recurring monthly charges,” Truth in Advertising wrote, before accusing the company of using “dissuasion and diversion tactics so that consumers encounter unnecessary difficulty when trying to cancel their Savage x Fenty Xtra VIP Memberships.”
Neither Rihanna nor Savage x Fenty have responded to the organization’s filing.
